The original "Nosh" student cookbook was inspired by Joy's son, Ben, who left for University with virtually no cooking ability, but he did like to eat! He almost made himself ill eating the wrong things and so Joy wrote this book to help him. Every recipe is accompanied by a full colour photo so you know exactly how it should turn out. This is the second edition and has even more quick and easy recipes than before. It is suitable for students, like Ben, who have busy lives, a low budget and hungry stomachs. A student cookbook of first choice, it has been Amazon’s No.1 Best selling student cookbook, for the last 7 years. Joy's straightforward approach using the minimum of ingredients and utensils, including no weighing scales, is designed to encourage even the most reluctant of cooks!
Based on Amazon's best selling student cookbook “Nosh for Students” this book uses all the same techniques of cooking without scales and with minimal utensils. As always there are photos with every recipe. Being vegetarian means it is not easy to buy 'fast' food or ready made meals. It therefore becomes necessary to cook! "Nosh for Students" has about 60 vegetarian or vegetarian alternative meals, but "Vegetarian Nosh for Students" is full of new recipes for those who keep away from fish or meat. Voted "Best Overall Winner" of vegetarian student cookbooks by the student testers at the Vegetarian Society in August 2007. Vegetarian Society Approved.
This student cookbook answers real questions from hundreds of real students. It's like having Joy in the kitchen with you. Her 'no-nonsense' answers, together with Joy's own illustrations, make the points well and in a memorable, fun way. She answers questions like: "What is the cheapest stuff I can get with the best nutritional value?"; "How do I know when food is really past it?"; "How can you tell when food is cooked?"; "How can I get Sunday lunch experience in student halls on a student budget?" This book will be a valuable reference for many as they progress through their student days and beyond. An ideal complement to Joy's other books.
A cookbook for those students graduating from University who had a great time but want to do things a little differently. You want to move on from tea and toast round your mate’s house and broaden your cooking knowledge and repertoire to something more special. Now you’ve graduated, you might have a little more money, but not necessarily more time. The recipes in the book are, on the whole, still quite simple, but with some different flavours and maybe some ingredients you have not used before. Joy seeks to use fresh ingredients and as little processed food as possible. Still no need for scales - just mugs and spoons - and as always photos with every recipe.
I studied Art and Design at Loughborough College of Art and Design. Among other things, I now use my creativity to write cookbooks. I have been married to Ron for over 30 years and we have two sons, Ben and Tim, who have now graduated from Uni. When my sister and I were quite young, probably 5 and 6 years old, we started to cook, mainly cakes, biscuits and simple meals. By the time I was 12, we would cook Sunday lunch. I love this heritage and am passionate about good food. There is nothing I love more than having a house full of people to feed.
At university, in Loughborough, I lived in fully catered accommodation, so I never learned much about cooking. Marrying a cook didn’t help either! Despite all of this, I have recently been elevated to the heady-heights of Sous Chef to Joy and we have worked together on cooking hundreds of meals for our books. For the first time, I have really enjoyed cooking.
I studied Design at Brighton Uni and was the original “hopeless cook” who inspired this series of books. I am a total convert to cooking now and do most of the cooking in my house. I love doing it. I have my own design business and when “Nosh for Graduates” was conceived I was super-keen to get involved, having designed the covers for the previous books. This book is a real ‘family project’ and has been such fun to do.
After graduating, I started working for the family business straight away and one of my first jobs, when I joined, was to do the photography for our student books. I absolutely love what I do. On a daily basis I get to be a part of creating recipes with mum, eating food with dad, designing layouts for books with Ben and messing about with cameras in my studio. Long may it continue!
